Sample Question (From the 1992 ÖYS Exam)

Sometimes, in whatever language, it's hard to find an exact equivalent to a foreign language conceptual meaning.

Which of the following sentences expresses the meaning of 'exact(ly), perfect(ly)' as used in the [leadoff] sentence [above].

  1. We're looking for an apartment that is suitable for our budget.
  2. You'll be able to decorate your room just as you like it.
  3. We have to find a definite solution to this problem as soon as possible.
  4. Each one of the children bought a suit of clothes.
  5. My father's shoes are just right for me [fit me perfectly].
Çözüm

Örnek olarak verilen cümledeki "tIpatIp" sözünün ne anlama geldigini, kendimizin buldugu sözlerle ifade edelim. Burada "tIpatIp" sözü "tamamen aynI, hiçbir farklIlIgI olmayan" anlamInI tasIyor. Seçeneklere baktIgImIzda 5'de "bana tam geldi" derken "tam" sözü "çocugun ayakkabIsIyla babasInIn ayakkabIsI arasInda ölçü bakImIndan hiçbir farklIlIgIn bulunmadIgI, ikisinin tamamen aynI oldugunu bildiriyor". Yani örnek cümledeki "tIpatIp" sözünün cümleye kattIgI anlamla aynI anlamdadIr. Cevap 5'dir.

Solution
Let's express in words what we find coming from the meaning of the word(s) 'exact(ly), perfect(ly)' given in the example [leadoff] sentence [at the beginning of the question]. There the word(s) carries the meaning of "completely the same; being no difference at all". When we look at the answer choices, we see in 5, "bana tam geldi" conveys the meaning, "You won't find a difference [in measurement] between the shoes of the father and the son, it's said they are exactly the same". So it means that it has the same [closest] meaning to that found in the leadoff sentence. The answer is 5.

Solution
In this type of question solution, we must find new words that aren't [very] different from the underlined words in the [sample] sentence(s). Let's study the underlined words in the given sentences. In sentence 1, the underlined words, "one year in forty", refer to [a long time without] seeing [someone]. In sentence 2, the underlined words mean "since/for a long time, it's been a long time". In sentence 3, the meaning is "with every passing day". In sentence 4, the underlined words mean "since a long time, it's a long time". [So} as seen in 2 and 4, the underlined words give the same [approximate] meaning . [Thus], the answer is E.

Answer
Örnek (ÖSS 1995)
AsagIdaki cümlelerin hangisinde altI çizili sözcük mecaz anlamIyla kullanIlmIstIr?

  1. Gelecek hafta bugün yine bulusalIm, dedi.
  2. Az sonra beyaz bir at üstünde gelin göründü.
  3. Çocugunu uyutmak için odaya götürdü.
  4. Bu bos sözleri dinlemekten bIkmIstI.
  5. AkrabalarInI görmek onlarla konusmak istiyordu.

Sample Question (From the 1995 ÖSS Exam)

In which of the sentences below, are the underlined word(s) a "figure of speech"?

  1. This day next week let's meet again, he said.
  2. A little later, the bride appeared on a white horse.
  3. To put the child to sleep, he was taken to his bedroom.
  4. He was fed up listening to those empty words.
  5. He wanted to speak to them, [in order to] see his family members.
Çözüm

Mecaz anlam, sözcügün gerçek anlamIndan büyük ölçüde farklIlasIp baska bir anlam tasImasI demektir. AltI çizili sözlere baktIgImIzda; "gelecek hafta" bir sonraki hafta demektir; "gelin" "evlenmek üzere olan, dügünü yapIlan bayan" demektir; "uyutmak", "uykuya yatIrmak"; "görmek", "gözle algIlamak" anlamIndadIr. Bunlar cümlelerde aynI anlamlarI verdiginden gerçek anlamlarInda kullanIlmIslardIr. "Bos" sözü ise gerçekte "dolu"nun karsItIdIr. Oysa burada "degersiz, aslI astarI olmayan" anlamlarInI tasIyor. Yani gerçek anlamIndan tamamen farklI bir anlama gelmis. Öyleyse mecaz anlamInda kullanIlmIstIr. Cevap 4'dir.

Solution
"Figure of Speech" means carrying another meaning than the 'real' meaning of the word(s). When we look at the underlined words: "gelecek hafta" means "next week"; "gelin" means "about-to-be-married woman"; "uyutmak" means "to put to bed to sleep"; "görmek" means "to perceive with the eyes". In these sentences the same meaning as the real meaning of the words is used. But, the word "bos" is the opposite of "full". So, here it carries the meaning of "valueless, not being true". That is to say, a completely different meaning than the real one arises. So it's used in the sense of a Figure of Speech. {And} the answer is 4.
